If you ask the Question: Does Money Buy Happiness? Obviously the majority
of the replies would be no, but why? Humans are very adaptable which is a
plus when It comes to homelessness for example, but also explains why
once we meet our basic needs, a lot more money doesn’t mean a lot more
happiness. We always seem to think that if we had just a little more money we
could be this much happier, but what happens when you get there? It’s not
enough. We overestimate how much pleasure we will get from having more.
While earning more makes you happy in the short term, you quickly adjust to
your new wealth--and everything it buys you. Yes you get a thrill of buying that
new Big Screen TV or Sports car, but you soon get used to them.
Our inability to stay satisfied is arguably one of the key reasons ancient man
moved out of his drafty cave and began building the civilization we now inhabit.
Money is like a shadow that runs away when we try to chase it. When we try to
run away from money, it chases us. Your next paycheck or payoff from hustling
may mean anything, a new car, a vacation, new clothes, a new cell phone,
maybe even drugs, but I’m sure its not very likely they will buy you much
happiness, or at least for very long. Happiness is a measure of quality not
quantity. Happiness is not attending an honorable party but attending a party
with honor. Happiness is not leading a luxurious life but the luxury of living a
life.
